MGMT 481: Strategic Management

Spring Semester 2011

THE ORIGAMI PROJECT

Your mission is to make beautiful paper products to submit to me, your Chairman, for my inspection and aesthetic gratification. Each company team can earn up to 25 points. Your Chairman will grade each company team's plan, products, and evaluation of their learning and performance in this exercise. I will ask others to assist me in the evaluation of your company team's performance including: paper folding experts, other professors, the Dean of the Business School, the Academic Vice Presidents, the Vice President of Research, and MSU President Davenport (and probably anyone else who will come and submit an opinion). I will limit each team to $15.00 for purchase of paper and supplies to make your origami products. Bring your receipts. I will limit your origami production time to 75 minutes in our classroom on Origami Day.

Make something that’s small.  We have limited space for display, usually one 8x2 table and the ceiling to hang origami  that hangs.  You can view all company team's submissions (products and reports) in MH 150. I will give your submissions to The Laurel's Edge

, an elderly rest home.  They have limited space to put the origami, so small compact beautiful things are great.  I have many origami books, libraries and bookstores have origami books, the web is full of good origami links.  Find a challenging project to make during class on Origami Day.

Your chairman will eventually donate the products you make to people who need them, comment on their beauty, or deserve a beautiful gift. Keep them "small" or something that can hang.  Your products must make you and other people happy.

1.     My requirement for eligibility for the origami project requires that each company team submit two copies of a 3 page (or less) plan for the project. Your plan must include a brief description of your products, a mission statement, objectives, strategies, and your organizational assignments and duties for this project. (10 possible points)

2. After submitting your plan, you will have 75 minutes to produce, inspect and decide which of your paper products that you will submit for evaluation. Avoid unnecessary embellishment. (10 possible points)

3. Finally, you will submit a two copies of a 1-2 page (or less) e-mail regarding what your group learned in the project and including an evaluation of your team's performance in successfully fulfilling your mission. (5 possible points)
