THOUGHTS ABOUT STUDENT PRESENTATIONS

1. Practice delivering your presentation before you make your actual presentation. Video tape it if you can for review. Time how long it takes to deliver.

2. Eye contact is important. Too many presenters never look up from their notes. Know what you have to say and say it looking your audience in the eye. Nothing is more deadly than a presenter who reads the presentation. Refer to your notes only to stay on track.

3. Don't mumble. Avoid a monotonic voice. Put some life into your voice and your presentation.

4. Don't try to explain financial data in words. Make your point with an overhead. Don't present more than one or two things with any visual aid. Ask yourself, "Is this visual aid clear or confusing and hard to follow?" Good visual aids and supports should have a professional look; be used to illustrate major points only. Follow the rules: "one idea, six words per line, and six lines."

5. Be imaginative. Humor is good if you can carry it off. Would you show the video tape of your presentation to your next employer as an example of your communication skills?
